Chokers were first worn by women of the elite class and ballerinas in the 19th century. At the same time, a plain, thin, black or red choker was an identification of a prostitiute and a plain, black, woven choker or ribbon signified lesbianism.
Chokers became popular in the 1990s. The trend reiterated in the 2010s.
